We are in uncharted territory in footballing terms. The global health emergency has understandably led to drastic changes to sport, from mass postponements to cancelled fixtures. With the Premier League extending the current season indefinitely in order to fulfil the fixture list, the start of the 2020/21 season will follow hot on the heels of the conclusion of the 2019/20 campaign – this is great news for Liverpool.

According to The Telegraph, the Premier League are hoping to resume fixtures on the 1st of June and start the next season on the 8th of August.
This plan would give us about nine weeks to play out nine weeks of fixtures. We can assume that there will be at least a few midweek games played in order to give as much of a gap between the two seasons as possible.
However, one thing is for certain: there will be no pre-season. There can be no time for touring around playing friendlies or warm weather training camps.
At best, clubs will get a couple of weeks off from football to recover, however, following the long lay off due to the health crisis, whether they will get or even need this break is up for debate.
The lack of a pre-season benefits Liverpool. The Reds are far and away the fittest team in the division, they have to be in order to implement Jürgen Klopp’s style of football.
Furthermore, Liverpool are at their best when they get into a rhythm, when they’re playing nearly constantly.
The December period is testament to this relishing of rhythm – The Reds won all nine of their games in December.
Starting the next season as soon as this campaign finishes will greatly benefit Liverpool.
