In the last few weeks our society has changed unrecognisably. The world has been flipped on its head and all in the interests of public safety. We are all doing our duty – I am having to put up with working from home with R Joe. The football has done its duty and been cancelled with much debate as to if and when it will return. According to BBC Sport, the Premier League could be liable to pay out £750m in compensation if the season doesn’t resume.
As it stands nobody knows what will become of this league campaign.
There has been calls for the season to be declared ‘null and void’, others have insisted that the current standings should remain final, whilst the more level headed of us want the Premier League season to resume whenever it can.
Each avenue has its own pitfalls. If we were to declare the season null and void then the legal and financial ramifications are immense: clubs such as Leeds United would likely drag the authorities through the courts for denying them promotion and rightly so.
If the current standings remained final then Bournemouth, Aston Villa and Norwich would go down – Eddie Howe’s side are only in the relegation zone due to goal difference and one goal at that.
BBC Football has reported that BT Sport and Sky Sports would be entitled to up to £750m in compensation should the Premier League not resume at a later date.
The companies have refused to comment on whether they’d seek the compensation though nobody would blame them – they shelled out £3bn for the rights to the tournament and it would be well within the authority’s power to just resume the season at a later date.
With not playing out the remaining fixtures meaning a massive financial loss to the governing body as well as individual clubs, the Premier League will surely have to resume at some point. Liverpool will be champions.
