Liverpool duo Curtis Jones and Neco Williams would lose out if the Premier League is cancelled. Both should have felt the benefit of the Reds’ dominant season.
No one knows what’s going to happen just yet. The suspension of the Premier League happened last week and while the plan is for an April return, that seems unlikely.
The Independent reported recently that cancelling the season is a genuine option. Whether that means voiding it entirely or calling the current table ‘finished’ would need figuring out.
Regardless, either one would hurt the development of two young Liverpool players.
Both Jones and Williams should have featured over the last few months of the Premier League season. Liverpool had all but wrapped the title up, leaving them with months of football without purpose.
They could have found purpose, however, by handing senior game time to two very promising young talents. We believe both Jones and Williams have what it takes to make it at the top and this would have been a valuable experience.
Instead, they’ll have to sit it out like everybody else, if things go the way they appear to be. It’s a real shame, too, as opportunities like this don’t’ really come along.
The pressure at the top of the game means it’s difficult to justify playing very young players at Premier League level. You need your best out at all times. When you’re winning the title in March, though, that pressure disappears.
Hopefully, Jurgen Klopp finds ways to give the duo the exposure they need further down the line. For now, though, a cancelled Premier League is a shame for these two very talented Liverpool youngsters.
