Liverpool are actually closer to a record Premier League title victory, as things stand. That’s despite – and because of – the league’s suspension.
The Premier League won’t resume until April 3rd at the earliest, as things stand. The current pandemic has led to a suspension of football all over Europe and on Friday, England followed suit.
Bizarrely, that means that Liverpool can break a Premier League record even earlier.
The Reds were already on course to break Manchester United’s record of winning the title with five games remaining. All they needed to do was win their next two games and the title was theirs.
Now, however, they only need to win one.
Jurgen Klopp’s team are scheduled to take on Manchester City on April 5th. If that game does go ahead – and it is a big if – then they would be champions with a victory.
City are the nearest challengers. They sit 25 points back, able to win another 30. Defeat to Liverpool, though, would leave them 28 points back with 27 to play for, leaving the Reds with an unassailable lead.
A lot could change before then, of course, but the current plan does actually leave Liverpool one game closer to the Premier League title.
Every fan would swap the record to end the uncertainty, however. There’s no guarantee that the league will even finish and, quite frankly, there are bigger things at play here.
Fingers crossed, then, that everything goes to plan and the Reds can wrap that title up next month.
