Liverpool were knocked out of the Champions League on Wednesday night. The Reds were eliminated at the hands of Atletico Madrid, with the Spanish side digging in deep to win the tie at Anfield. However, all may not be lost, Liverpool could still win back to back Champions League trophies if this season’s competition is cancelled.

Atletico Madrid knew what they had to do on Wednesday and they did it well for the most part.
The visitors had a slender one goal lead but they surrendered that in the first half when Gini Wijnaldum headed past Jan Oblak.
After Roberto Firmino put the hosts in the lead in extra time, Atletico seized their opportunity by latching onto a mistake by Adrian, they then scored twice more as The Reds sought to get past the away goal rule.
With Kopites licking their wounds following the defeat, there may be some consolation.
The global health panic is leading to mass cancellations of large gatherings.
Serie A has been suspended in Italy and with footballers testing positive for the disease, there are concerns over the future of European competition this season.
Manchester City’s second leg tie with Real Madrid has already been postponed and UEFA has confirmed that they’ll be hosting a video conference next week in order to coordinate their response to the health issue.
Many are expecting the governing body to cancel the competition for the season. Without a winner for 2019/20, Liverpool could theoretically win back to back Champions League trophies despite being knocked out.
Of course, this is just a pithy, tongue in cheek consolation and the main focus at the minute is not on football.
We all need to be doing what we can to help each other and society as a whole, if that means cancelling the footy then so be it. Football is unimportant during a civil emergency.
