Timo Werner has openly expressed doubts over a move to Liverpool. It’s not a mentality that works at the Anfield club.

“At this time in professional soccer there are two different variations,” Werner told Sky Sports. “The first is to be part of a team like Liverpool or Manchester City. They have a good working team. The teams have also great coaches.

“But this is the question: do you want to go to that kind of team, because the situation is already that hard for each member and you want to be a part of it? That’s one point you have to look at.

“The other side are teams which need some big changes, because they just won a few big titles, but they are not able to compete on the highest level anymore. For me Manchester United is one of these teams.”

There has long been talk of Liverpool’s interest in Werner. The German forward has a fantastic record in the Bundesliga this season, after all – 21 goals in 25 games – and everyone will consider him.

The Liverpool Echo suggested recently that Werner has a £50m release clause and Liverpool simply haven’t yet decided if they want to pay it.

What RTK has to say

Th these doubts aren’t a good sign if Liverpool do want Werner. For a club that puts emphasis on a player’s mentality, the 24-year-old is showing worrying issues.

And it’s not as simple as ‘he should want to join Liverpool’ – not everyone will, for varying reasons – or that he mentions United. The problem is that he looks at Liverpool and worries if it’s too hard.

You join a club like Liverpool because you want to be a part of the project or the group. Or perhaps, it’s because you’ve seen others develop there and see it as the right training ground.

But to look at Liverpool and wonder if, individually, it’s too tough – that doesn’t really mesh with the club’s ‘win every game’ mentality.

Werner is undoubtedly a very talented player but the really raises a question mark over his suitability.
