This weekend we saw Liverpool fall to their first league defeat in 44 games. The Reds’ loss was a bitter pill to swallow but Kopites have already started seeing the funny side. Jürgen Klopp had a tough call to make regarding Joe Gomez on Saturday but he half made the right decision despite heavy criticism.

Joe Gomez was left out of the side that fell at Vicarage Road as a ‘minor precaution’.

The gaffer said that the defender ‘felt something’ and that was enough to keep him out of the side.

Dejan Lovren stepped into his shoes and the lads fell to a 3-0 defeat, we have already pointed out that it can be no coincidence that the Croatian has started our three worst defeats of the Klopp era.

Despite the loss, Jürgen Klopp made the right call by keeping Joe Gomez out, the Englishman is vital to our Champions League campaign and we should take no risks with him for that reason.

The boss just should have played Joel Matip over Dejan Lovren.

This time last season Matip was really hitting his stride, he was growing into that weighty Liverpool shirt.

The Gomez leg break had afforded the Cameroonian a run in the side and he took it with both hands, rapidly becoming one of the most improved defenders in Europe.

So, why Dejan over Joel? The only reasoning we can think of is to give him a last hurrah, he is most likely heading for the exit door over the summer, with a move to the Italian Serie A mooted.

Matip on the other hand will likely stick around for a few years yet, he has shown that he has the ability to hold his own next to Virgil van Dijk and he will be waiting in the wings for another Gomez injury spell.
