On Saturday, Liverpool lost their first league game since January 2019. The Reds had been on a 44 game unbeaten run before their invincibles hopes were dashed by a plucky, defiant Watford. Liverpool’s defeat at Watford proved the importance of Joe Gomez.

Joe Gomez has been the first choice partner for Virgil van Dijk since December.

The Englishman had previously struck up a telepathic, impassable partnership with Virgil at the start of the 2018/19 campaign before he broke his leg in a match with Burnley.

After being given another shot in the side in December 2019, the 22-year-old centre back never looked back. When JoGo returned to the lineup, so did the clean sheets.

On Saturday, Gomez was left out of the side as a precaution, with Dejan Lovren taking his place in the lineup.

The result was a disaster. The Hornets exploited a disjointed Reds defence, with Ismaila Sarr grabbing a brace before Troy Deeney rounded off the scoring.

The loss to Watford served to show just how important Joe Gomez is to the side. His partnership with Virgil van Dijk is rarely compromised, with the club recording seven straight clean sheets in the league after he returned to the side.

Thankfully, one silver lining of the result will likely be the security of Joe Gomez’s place in the side going forward.

Surely now there can be no doubt about the defender. Dejan Lovren proved that he isn’t up to the task. JoGo has a decade ahead of him at least, he needs to be playing regularly for the coming seasons so that he can realise his potential and Liverpool can maintain their clean sheets.

If we can keep him fit, we can keep the ball out of the net.
