Liverpool face Watford on Saturday away from home and winning big isn’t the ultimate goal.
Saturday is 19th place hosting 1st place – and a distant 1st, at that. It’s the kind of game, then, that the league leaders can hope for a big win against inferior opposition.
But that really shouldn’t be the focus. It would be great, of course, and hopefully, Liverpool can rack up a 6-0 win (even if Jurgen Klopp doesn’t think it’s possible).
More important, however, is a clean sheet. That has to be the aim here.
Honestly, 1-0 would be a far more reassuring result than even 4-1, given the importance of keeping a clean sheet. That’s simply because these next few games are all about preparation for Atletico Madrid.
The Reds face Atletico at Anfield in under two weeks. They go into that game with a 1-0 away defeat, meaning any Atletico goal makes their job a lot harder.
Liverpool looked less-than-solid defensively against West Ham United, though. In fact, that performance was quite worrying if Liverpool do need to shut Atletico out.
And so they need to get back into that clean-sheet habit that they had a few weeks ago. That starts with Watford.
Another poor defensive performance would set off alarm bells, in fact. It would suggest that Liverpool’s task against Atletico is actually incredibly difficult, seeing as one goal for the Spaniards necessitates three for the hosts.
But they can get back on track with a reassuring performance at Vicarage Road. Winning big really isn’t the priority against Watford then – Liverpool just need to keep a clean-sheet.
