Liverpool haven’t put a foot wrong in the transfer market in recent years. Michael Edwards’ recruitment team, alongside Jürgen Klopp, has pulled off some bargain buys in the last five years with not a flop in sight. The only slight aberration has been the inconsistent fitness of Naby Keita. Jürgen Klopp has insisted that Keita just needs game time.
The Reds agreed a deal to sign Naby Keita from RB Leipzig in July 2017, with the £48m transfer seeing him arrive the following summer.
Although the Guinean midfielder arrived at Anfield with bags of promise he has failed to live up to the hype thus far.
Of course, this isn’t for the want of trying. Kopites have been treated to flashes of the ex-Leipzig man’s brilliance, a run of games in December 2019 saw his best form since joining the club.
The issue with Nabs has always been one of fitness; when he plays he is, more often than not, brilliant.
Jürgen Klopp believes that Naby Keita just needs more games, the boss told the official club site:
“Naby is a brilliant player. We only have to make sure we have only brilliant players, by the way! That’s sometimes the problem of the players; when you play, you play really well and why should we change?
“I never doubt Naby. Of course he needs games, that’s clear, that’s why he gets games when he is fit.”
What RTK has to say
If Keita managed to stay fit for a month we would be without a care in the world.
When Nabs plays and plays again he quickly demonstrates why we paid so much money for him.
The Guinean breaks the lines, he is always looking to play sharp one-twos and beat his man – he is critical when we come up against a low block.
Fingers crossed the gaffer gets what he wants and the club record signing gets a run in the side.
