This season, as well as most of last season, Liverpool have proved impossible to beat. The Reds have been in emphatic form since losing to Manchester City last January with only a handful of sides getting away without a loss, one such player has been speaking of his pride at escaping The Reds’ wrath. Lorenzo Insigne has described Napoli as “Liverpool’s bogeyman”.
This September saw Napoli become the only side this season to beat Liverpool in a competitive fixture over 90 minutes. Aston Villa do not count.
The Italian side ran out 2-0 winners at home in the Champions League, although the score line was harsh on the visitors.
Napoli were awarded a late penalty for what appeared to be a dive, the hosts’ second goal came shortly afterwards as Liverpool went gung ho for an equaliser.
Then in November, Carlo Ancelotti brought The Blues to Anfield, literally and metaphorically, as he held on to a 1-1 draw which forced Liverpool to wait until the final match day to secure top spot in the group.
“Whenever we played against Liverpool we had great performances, against them we play stratospheric games, we became Liverpool’s bogeyman.
“In two games this season we got four points against them, and that gives us great satisfaction.”
What RTK has to say
Unfortunately he isn’t wrong, the Italians beat us away last season too.
Thankfully for us, they’ve lost their talismanic gaffer, Carlo Ancelotti, to Everton.
The boss was removed from the helm at Napoli despite qualifying from the group stage of the Champions League.
Without Carlo Magnifico we don’t feel that Napoli would be able to put up as strong a fight against The Reds next time out.
