Real Betis reportedly want to sign Adrian at the end of the season. If true, Caoimhín Kelleher could become a first-team player next season.
Liverpool may struggle to hold onto Adrian if Betis really do want to sign him. The Spaniard began his career there and is a boyhood fan – playing there was his ‘first dream’.
And according to Estadio Deportivo, they want him back. It might be hard for Liverpool to hold onto him in that case. For one thing, he’s 33 and unlikely to get the chance to return there again.
Then there’s the fact that he’d fancy his chances of being a regular in Seville. That’s something he won’t achieve in Liverpool. And if the Reds do clinch the Premier League this season, Adrian will have surely achieved exactly what he set out to.
Losing your backup goalkeeper is never the worst thing in the world but they do need replacing. Liverpool signed Adrian for that reason, after all. Simon Mignolet left for Club Brugge, so the Reds signed Adrian on a free.
But this time, Liverpool don’t need to search for anyone. Kelleher is waiting in the wings and can surely take up the mantle of backup if Adrian does sign for Betis.
Kelleher is now 21 and has some interesting experience behind him. He’s played 10 times for the Irish Under 21 team but he’s also featured in senior games for Liverpool.
Most notable, Kelleher saved a penalty against Arsenal in the League Cup and put in a composed performance against Shrewsbury this week.
Those are decent building blocks. Certainly, the kind of showings that Liverpool can use to develop a player. No, he wouldn’t as sure a thing as Adrian but Kelleher looks ready to take a step up.
It really comes down to whether Liverpool are prepared to gamble. And recently, those gambles do seem to always come off for the Reds.
