Tonight sees Liverpool take on Shrewsbury Town in an FA Cup replay with The Reds set to field an U23 side against The Salop. Teenage wonderkid Curtis Jones could equal a Luis Suarez goal scoring streak if he finds the net tonight.
The Reds have come in for widespread criticism for their decision to play the kids in the FA Cup.
Jürgen Klopp announced immediately after the opening tie that he intended to respect the Premier League’s wishes by resting his senior side for the replay.
This means that Neil Critchley will be in charge of his U23 side for the cup affair.
The kids have proved their worth already this season, with a young side dominating local rivals Everton in a 1-0 FA Cup third round win.
It was Klopp’s local hero that scored the winner in the Derby and it was the same lad that popped up with our opener against The Salop in January.
If Curtis Jones scores this evening he will become the first Red since Luis Suarez to score in three successive FA Cup ties.
What RTK has to say
Jones would certainly be in good company should he replicate Suarez’s hot streak.
The cups have given Kopites a glimpse into what is to come from the next best thing from the academy.
The 18-year-old is certain to be a star of tomorrow for Liverpool and his sporadic first team performances have shown that.
His winner against Everton was straight out of the top drawer and his opener against Shrewsbury Town was well taken.
If The Reds wrap the league up early we may see Curtis Jones take on more first team duties sooner rather than later, another goal tonight wouldn’t harm his case.
