The January transfer window has now slammed shut but that won’t stop publications from dissecting the aftermath. According to LeSport10 in France, Boubakary Soumare rejected an offer from Newcastle United in the hope of joining Liverpool in the summer.
Soumare is rumoured to be a man in demand.
The 20-year-old Lille midfielder is wanted by Liverpool, Manchester City and Newcastle United according to LeSport10.
This season has seen the youngster make 15 league starts as a defensive midfielder for the French side.
Despite his young age he has already made over 50 league appearances for Lille.
He is well thought of in the football world with the Daily Mail recently hailing him as “the new Paul Pogba”.
The BBC reported on the 31st of January that Newcastle had a £35m bid for the youngster accepted but in Steve Bruce’s words: “the player wanted to stay where he was.”
What RTK has to say
This seems like a good sign.
Turning down Newcastle United can’t have been an easy decision given that playing in the Premier League is an aspiration for a lot of players.
With the player deciding against the move there could be an ulterior motive.
Of course, Lille can offer European competition whilst The Magpies languish mid table but we can’t rule out that his rejection of the North East side wasn’t due to him waiting around for The Reds.
The 20-year-old has been praised for his work rate, this determination is critical to playing for Jürgen Klopp given the gaffer’s intense style of play.
Soumare definitely fits the profile of a Liverpool signing given his age and style of play, his decision to stay put at Lille for now could be telling in the summer.
