This Liverpool side are one of the greatest that English football has ever seen. The Reds have been smashing records for fun this year – after beating Spurs they became the first side in the history of Europe’s top five leagues to win 20 of their first 21 games. Liverpool are now just eight points shy of eclipsing the Manchester United side of 1996/97.

Back in 1997, United lifted the Premier League with just 75 points.

75.

Last season Jürgen Klopp’s side finished second with 97 points, United won it with 75 in the past. Incredible.

As it stands, Liverpool have 67 points, meaning they are now just eight shy of the total that United won the league with in 1997.

This is important because the late 90s Manchester United is hailed as one of the greatest sides Sir Alex Ferguson had at Old Trafford.

The Class of ’92 were approaching their prime, two years later they won the treble.

The fact that The Reds are so close to eclipsing the great 90s United side with four months of the season left says a lot about this Liverpool squad.

Jürgen Klopp has put together a team without compare – his side have lost just once in the last year and are on course to smash the record for the earliest title win by a month, with them wrapping up the league as early as mid march if Manchester City continue to hemorrhage points.

There will be a million and one stats that will emerge as the glorious Reds continue their march towards destiny but eclipsing Manchester United so early in the season will prove to be one of the more satisfying landmarks for Kopites.
