Jurgen Klopp confirms there will be ‘fresh legs’ for Shrewsbury clash

Liverpool once again displayed the hallmark of champions to record their 14th consecutive Premier League victory after rallying a vital 2-1 win against Wolves on Thursday.

The runaway league leaders are now a gargantuan 16 points clear at the top of the table despite having played a game less than all of their title rivals. Next in line for Jurgen Klopp’s record-breaking squad is League One side Shrewsbury Town in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday.

The Reds will be looking to progress into the fifth round of the world’s oldest cup competition for the first time since 2015. Liverpool prevailed in the previous round following a 1-0 victory over Merseyside rivals Everton three weeks ago.

Klopp made wholesale changes in that emphatic victory with the likes of Alisson, Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andy Robertson, Georginio Wijnaldum, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino all handed the day off and then promptly lost James Milner to injury early on.

At one stage in the match, six of Liverpool’s 10 outfield players had never started a Premier League game.

It was one of the great Anfield performances of the season as 18-year-old Curtis Jones sparked scenes of pandemonium inside the home of the European champions. Having collected a pass from Divock Origi, the academy graduate curled an exquisite 20-yard strike past a helpless Jordan Pickford and in off the underside of the bar.

My Revenge On Ben Foster

The teenager’s first goal in professional football made Jones Liverpool’s youngest scorer in a derby since Robbie Fowler back in 1994.

It was a performance where the kids rewarded their manager’s faith and some. The 235th Merseyside derby victory will likely see some of the third-round heroes feature again against Shrewsbury.

Following such a gruelling encounter at Molineux yesterday, Klopp confirmed he will need to give Thursday night’s heroes some much needed time off.

Speaking in his Friday afternoon press-conference [Liverpool FC Official Website] Klopp said: “Yes. We will have a team with fresh legs, players coming back or who have come back from injury.

“It makes sense to play them, they are pretty good. We want to go through. It’s a tough place to go, as it always is in cup competitions.”

The FA Cup is a competition that has haunted the German manager in the past with Klopp still yet to progress past the fourth round since his appointment in 2015.

Shrewsbury Town secured a clash with the world and European champions following their 1-0 victory over Championship side Bristol City in the previous round.

What RTK has to say

It’s quite possible that Klopp could make 11 changes to the team that beat Wolves. Returning duo Joel Matip and Fabinho will want some much-needed game-time under their belts whilst Yasser Larouci will hope to make his first Liverpool start.

Adrian is set to return to the Liverpool line-up for the first time in three weeks with the Spaniard almost certain to replace Alisson in between the sticks.

Sepp van den Berg could also make his first Liverpool start since October with Gomez and Van Dijk in need of an afternoon off whilst Dejan Lovren has only just returned to training.

Predicted XI: Adrian, Williams, Van den Berg, Matip, Laurouci, Fabinho, Lallana, Jones, Elliott, Origi, Minamino.
