December saw a flurry of activity at Liverpool, there were signings announced an trophies won but perhaps the most important piece of news was Jürgen Klopp’s contract extension. The German gaffer signed a new deal keeping him at the club until 2024. There have still been questions as to who will succeed the boss at Anfield – Steven Gerrard has made some comments about phone calls with Jürgen Klopp that could be revealing.
There have been a number of reports in recent weeks, months and years which have suggested that Steven Gerrard will take over the Liverpool manager’s job at some point in the future. Given his connection to the club and his success at Rangers it would make sense to see the legend in the dugout.
Speaking to Jamie Carragher on the Greatest Game podcast, Gerrard revealed that he regularly asks Klopp for tactical advice, saying:
“Every little bit I can try and get off him, or find out why he did it, I’ll try and get off him…I can text him and say ‘you did that in the game what was your thinking?’ Straight away he’s back to me. ‘Why did you play him there?’ Straight away he’s an open book. He doesn’t care about me wanting to know how he plays or why he did something – that’s what I love about him.”
What RTK has to say
Is Klopp likely to be giving tactical advice to absolutely every manager that asks for it or is Stevie a special case? Is the gaffer helping him out because he wants to mould him in his own image?
The fact that Gerrard calls Klopp for advice is encouraging because if Stevie does end up in the Anfield dugout we would want him to be continuing Jürgen’s work.
The main concern with installing Captain Fantastic as manager in future is the potential transition period, their close contact can help alleviate these concerns.
