Jose Mourinho says he has the belief that Tottenham Hotspur can beat Liverpool – even if few people do. The comments highlight just what a force Liverpool are.
It wasn’t long ago at all that Spurs v Liverpool was a very close game. They beat the Reds 4-1 at home the season before last, for instance, in the pre-Virgil van Dijk era.
Things have changed since then, of course, at both clubs. Mourinho is now the Spurs boss, the season after they reached a Champions League final. While Liverpool have progressed to even higher levels.
And nothing really sums that up more than Mourinho’s comments before Saturday’s game.
“We know how good they are – we can imagine in this room, probably only two persons think we can win,” Mourinho said at his press conference, per Sky Sports, before pulling in his director of communications Simon Felstein.
“We believe. If you don’t believe, get out!”
Now, there are two things to remember. Firstly, Spurs do have injury problems, making an already tough game even more difficult. Secondly, it’s Mourinho – he does like the odd mind game.
But it still remains that Spurs, a team in sixth, a fellow member of the ‘big six’ and Champions League finalists last year, feel as though they’re enormous underdogs against Liverpool.
It’s remarkable when you think about it. These two teams were on par before last season, really, while now the Spurs boss is talking about the matchup in much the same way a non-league boss would.
To have Mourinho – and Spurs – relying on belief to beat you is huge praise. A brilliant example of Liverpool being the Premier League’s dominant force.
