Liverpool can set another record this weekend as the Reds travel to face Jose Mourinho’s Spurs side. By beating the North London club Liverpool would boast the best ever start to a Premier League season after 21 games.
The current record is held by Manchester City who collected 59 points in the same amount of games during the 2017/18 season.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have enjoyed an almost perfect start to the campaign. The 52-year-old has led Liverpool to 19 wins in 20 games so far. The only blemish was a 1-1 draw with bitter rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford.
At the moment, the Reds are runaway leaders in the Premier League with 58 points. Liverpool also have a 13-point cushion at the top of the table with a game in hand. It’s beginning to look like our year and all these records are just a bi-product of our determination to end the 30-year league title drought. Nonetheless they should not be overlooked due to the weight they will hold in years to come.
Pep Guardiola’s City side set the record during an amazing season which saw them win the league by a landslide in 2018. The Blues ultimately finished on 100 points, 19 ahead of their nearest rivals. At this stage of the season the question has become how early and by how many points will Liverpool win the league.
While getting over the line is the ultimate goal, doing it in style would cement this side as maybe the best of all time. Breaking another record this weekend would also go some way to proving the above. Saturday’s trip to Tottenham is primarily about the three points, but the added incentive of a piece of history puts extra spice to an already fiery affair.
