Gini Wijnaldum is coming to the end of his contract but there are no worries at Liverpool, according to Sky Sports.
They claim that Liverpool feel a new contract is inevitable after Wijnaldum’s ends in 18 months. Wijnaldum, for his part, feels he’s at the ‘best club in the world’ and thus there’s no panic.
Both sides feel they can take their time and relax with the situation. Wijnaldum isn’t going anywhere, in other words, despite his contract situation.
What RTK has to say
There are plenty of examples of Liverpool’s progress over the last few years but this is one of the best.
Wijnaldum has become one of the world’s best midfielders since his £25m arrival, after all, and there’s no doubt that every club would love to have him. The fact that there’s no rush to tie him down, that there’s so much confidence in a renewal, shows just how far the Reds have come.
Even just 18 months ago, Liverpool were powerless to hold onto Emre Can. The German came to the end of his deal, saw a brighter future with Juventus, and walked out.
Now, it’s possible that he’s merely become a cautionary tale to players like Wijnaldum, of course. Can’s ‘brighter future’ was actually a lot darker than it seemed.
But the point remains that Liverpool have progressed far enough that they can live in confidence that players see the club as the pinnacle. That’s a wonderful position to be in and one that the Reds haven’t held for a long time.
And so there’s no need to worry about Wijnaldum and his contract. If the club want him at Anfield, he’ll stay.
