Liverpool U18’s began the new year in style by beating Blackburn. The young Reds ran out 3-0 winners at the Kirkby Academy on Saturday afternoon. Layton Stewart was the man of the match, netting two goals for Barry Lewtas’ side. The 17-year-old took his goal tally to 12 for the season.

Despite dominating the first half Liverpool failed to break the deadlock. Blackburn goalkeeper Jordan Eastham was in fine form the keep his side in it. Two impressive saves from Max Woltman and Stewart meant the Reds had to settle for 0-0 at half time.

The Rovers ‘keeper failed to meet expectations in the second half. After a long clearance up field, Eastham came rushing out only to collide with his defender. Stewart was left with an empty net and made no mistake. The young midfielder tapped home for his 11th goal of the campaign after 54 minutes.

His 12th of the year came 17 minutes from time. Taylor Morton was brought down in the box and the referee pointed to the spot. Stewart stepped up and slotted home to give Liverpool a dominant 2-0 lead. The third goal quickly followed. Stewart was in on goal but despite being on a hat-trick he squared to a Liverpool teammate. Fidel O’Rourke benefited to tap home for 3-0 and a resounding win to begin 2020.

The young Reds are now up to 2nd in Premier League U18. Lewtas and co closed the gap to five points on league leaders Manchester City. With a game in hand they’ll be hoping to put even more pressure on their rivals over the next few weeks.
