Today sees Jürgen Klopp and Liverpool take on Sheffield United and Chris Wilder. The Reds are currently 10 points clear at the top of the table with two games in hand over second placed Leicester City. With every game of the utmost importance as the Reds fight for their first Premier League title in 30 years, Kopites can take heart from an incredible stat going into this evening’s game.
Since taking over at Anfield Jürgen Klopp has won all 11 home games against promoted sides, racking up an aggregate score of 33-4 against Premier League new boys.
This is yet another illustration of the change in mentality since Klopp took over. In previous years we have struggled against weaker opposition but performed well in more difficult games – our last loss at home to a promoted side was the calamitous 2-1 defeat to Blackpool in October 2010.
We have been much stronger against weaker sides since Klopp’s arrival, our 4-1 win over Norwich on the opening day is a perfect snapshot of the ruthless streak that this Liverpool squad have developed.
However, this Sheffield United side are completely different animal to many of the promoted teams that we’ve faced over the years. The South Yorkshire outfit have been impressive on the road, their away form has helped the newbies climb the table into 8th place – just seven points off fourth, two off fifth.
Jürgen Klopp won’t be taking anything for granted but his record for obliterating promoted sides should ease any nerves that Kopites have before our first match of the decade.
