A win is a win. The Reds have shown this week that they can do it any which way, they blew Leicester City away and hung on against Wolves – a win is a win is a win. Liverpool are now 13 points clear at the top of the table with a game in hand over Brendan Rodgers’ Foxes. Speaking after the win over Wolves, Martin Keown said that Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez could be the division’s best ever partnership.
The Reds registered yet another clean sheet on Sunday, Alisson Becker’s 4th of the season. It was only a matter of time before the Reds got back to shutting sides out, the main issue that Jürgen Klopp faced was not having a consistent back five due to injuries to Joel Matip, Alisson Becker and Dejan Lovren.
Martin Keown was full of praise for Van Dijk and Gomez, saying on Match of the Day 2:
“I think they’re going to be as good as anything you’re ever going to see in the in the Premier League. That’s high praise indeed but honestly I think they’re magnificent. It’s their pace but also their ability to pass the ball…the full backs can push on because these two give you the license to do that with their pace.”
What RTK has to say
Martin Keown is spot on with his assessment of Van Dijk and Gomez. Before JoGo had his leg broken last year the pair were impassable at the start of the campaign, they appear to have rekindled their understanding.
With a lot of football yet to play, if we can keep Van Dijk and Gomez fit we could be looking at an invincibles campaign. If we can keep them fit long term then we are looking at the early moments of a legendary partnership. With Joe Gomez just 22-years-old he will just keep getting better.
