It is a wonderful time to be a Kopite. The Reds are miles ahead of Manchester United. For years we had to deal with their jibes about knocking us off our perch, we are very much atop it again now. Despite the obvious gulf in quality between the two sides, Luke Shaw has claimed that the Liverpool squad is no better than Manchester United’s.
United signed Luke Shaw for £27m way back in 2014, back when Shaw was an 18-year-old sensation. It seemed a ridiculously large amount of money at the time, it still does. Whilst he has had some impressive spells his Old Trafford career has been hampered by injuries.
The Reds are now an incredible 24 points clear of their old rivals, with a game in hand to boot. Who would have guessed this would be where we are when Roy Hodgson was in?
However, Luke Shaw believes that Liverpool aren’t as far ahead as it seems, he told the official Manchester United site:
“I feel that the squad we have is no different from the squads that are challenging for the title. We’ve got such amazing players and some amazing young players who are still learning. Of course, we’re all still learning and all still wanting to improve.”
What RTK has to say
Whilst this is a touch ridiculous, Luke Shaw has a small point here. He isn’t completely wrong insofar as all elite division squads are more similar than you think. Football is a game of marginal gains.
At the minute there is a lot of talent in the United squad and a lot of talent in the Liverpool dugout. The Reds have one of the best coaching teams in the world, for the most part Jürgen Klopp is the difference between Manchester United and Liverpool’s squads. The German has turned average players into world beaters. The squad may be similar but they aren’t playing similarly.
