The French Ligue 1 has been a hotbed for Liverpool speculation in recent seasons, particularly due to the persistence of rumours linking the Reds with Kylian Mbappe. The latest Reds news to come out of the country across the channel is that Lille goalkeeper Mike Maignan is a “big fan” of Liverpool and is open to a move in future.
Maignan has caught the eye with some strong performances in the Champions League this season, despite his side’s poor showing in the group stage.
The 24-year-old shot stopper is the first choice keeper at Lille, his club are currently fourth in the league – just two points off third place.
Get French Football reported that the goalie confessed “I have been a big fan of Liverpool since I was little. I like Steven Gerrard a lot, I used to love his style.” When asked about whether he’d like to move to Anfield in the future, the shot stopper replied “why not?”
What RTK has to say
Whilst Mike Maignan is huge Liverpool fan, he isn’t likely to get the move of his dreams any time soon. Alisson Becker looks set to don the Reds’ gloves for years and years to come.
However, this story does shed light on the importance of building the Liverpool brand. If in 10 years time we find ourselves in a transfer tussle for the next best thing, having them grow up as a Kopite could make the difference.
We need as many Liverpool fans as possible throughout the world, you never know – one of them might win the Ballon d’Or one day.
