Ex-Red says Liverpool have peaked after Club World Cup win

Former Liverpool midfielder John Barnes has claimed Jurgen Klopp’s side have peaked.

The claim comes after the Reds triumphed in the Club World Cup this weekend.

After picking up a third trophy since June, Barnes believes this Liverpool side cannot get any better.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror, he said Klopp’s team are ‘phenomenal’ and he doesn’t believe they can improve during 2020.

“In terms of what they have done so far, I can see them doing it again next year. But if Man City or Man United spend lots of money to improve, can we say that Liverpool are definitely going to win the league? But in terms of what Jurgen Klopp has been then it is phenomenal. You have to maintain your consistency and I don’t think this Liverpool team can actually get any better, but they can be as consistent.”

Despite his lofty standing in the game, I have to disagree with Barnes on this one. This is still a relatively young squad, with a lot they still need to accomplish.

Klopp’s Liverpool first need to end their 30-year drought before we can they can be anywhere close to peaking. Even though we are massive favourites for the Premier League, that job is far from done

The German manager signing a new deal suggests he doesn’t’ think Liverpool have peaked. Neither does the signing of Takumi Minamino, or the increased emphasis on the Reds youth players in the last six months.

This Liverpool side will continue to grow over the coming years, win every piece of silverware on offer. Then and only then can anyone, including footballing legends, claim Klopp’s squad have hit their peak.
