Former Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure believes Sadio Mane should have won the Ballon d’Or.
The Liverpool forward has enjoyed a fantastic year but finished fourth in the voting.
Lionel Messi was the eventual winner in front of Reds teammate Virgil Van Dijk and five-time winner Cristiano Ronaldo.
However, Toure doesn’t agree with the final results. Speaking to the Daily Mirror, he said. “To be honest he (Mane) deserved to win the Ballon d’Or first. In Africa we don’t see any better players than him.”
“Did you see the votes? Did you see what he did in the last year, how many goals he scored, what he achieved with Liverpool? For me it is a shame when a team wins this trophy [the Champions League] and the winner of the Ballon d’Or is not coming from there.”
The 36-year-old central midfield certainly has a point. No one has had a better year than Mane. Stats wise he was the joint top goal scorer in the Premier League last season. While with his club he won the most prestigious prize in European football; as well as the Super Cup a couple of months later. What more could he have done?
Liverpool’s Senegalese striker will now have to settle for African player of the year. The award will be decided next month, and Mane is expected to battle it out with Reds teammate Mohamed Salah for the honour.
Both players will look to strengthen their case for the award as Liverpool go for a third trophy in 2019. The Reds will attempt to win their first ever Club World Cup against Flamengo on Saturday.
