Jadon Sancho broke a 50-year-old Bundesliga record on Tuesday. He’s surely proven that he’s a player Liverpool should be striving for.
Borussia Dortmund drew 3-3 with title-rivals RB Leipzig, with Sancho scoring the third on 55 minutes. It was a good goal, too, as he collected a cut-back inside the box, composed himself, and lashed it into the back of the net.
It’s a goal that continues a fantastic run of form for the 19-year-old. Sancho has scored in his last seven games in all competitions, contributing eight goals and five assists in that time.
That’s form that puts him firmly in the mix of Europe’s best right now. His goal against Leipzig did more than just continue his form, however.
Sancho is now the youngest player in Bundesliga history to score 22 goals, breaking Horst Köppel’s record from 1968. He beats that record by two days and draws him closer to the all-time record for a teenager.
Koppel, as well as Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Kai Havertz, managed 24 Bundesliga goals before they turned 20. Sancho is now just two behind and will surely break that record, too.
What RTK has to say
We said back in November that while Dortmund may want to sell Sancho, Liverpool should wait and see until they were sure before moving for him.
That was down to reported disciplinary issues and general form. Sancho hadn’t started the game before that against Barcelona – although, he had scored in back-to-back games.
The teenager has started and scored in every single game since, though, usually adding an assist, too. So while we did think he may take a little bit longer to prove how good he is, it’s plain to see that he’s done it.
With this kind of form at his age, there’s absolutely no doubt that Liverpool should move for Sancho if he really is available. The Telegraph claimed last month that a fee of £100m would be needed and the Reds were interested.
Right now, that seems like a bargain.
