The Champions League draw has been made. Liverpool will take on Atletico Madrid whilst Manchester City will face Real Madrid. With many pundits tipping the two English sides to be the favourites for the Champions League, John Aldridge has claimed that Pep Guardiola is “freaked out” by Jürgen Klopp.
The ex-Liverpool forward told the Irish Independent that he believes the two North West sides are the teams to beat in this year’s competition, insisting that they are becoming the “big two” in Europe. Aldo told the paper:
“[Manchester City] have not performed at their best in Europe and there seems to be a block for them when they get to the latter stages of the competition. They will be contenders again this season, but they will probably have to get past Liverpool and we all know now that Guardiola is freaked out every time he goes up against Klopp.”
What RTK has to say
John Aldridge loves having a pop at Pep Guardiola. Speaking after the Reds’ win over City earlier in the season, Aldo said that Pep had acted like a child on the touchline.
The former Liverpool striker has a point in his assessment of the state of affairs in European competition. The Reds have become the most feared side in the competition whilst you can never dismiss Man City’s ability.
Whether or not the Lancashire club manage to shake off their Champions League hoodoo remains to be seen. If they want to win the competition they’ll have to go through the Reds and who would rate their chances beating us in our competition?
With the Blues set to play Real Madrid, there is a huge barrier before Guardiola can “freak out” against Klopp again.
