Well, this is one we didn’t see coming. The Reds have been linked with all and sundry in recent months; a quiet summer window and record profits have combined for a media circus that is guessing away at where FSG will spend their riches. The latest rumour is that Liverpool will move for Neymar from PSG.
According to Le Parisien in France there are a number of Europe’s top clubs chasing the Brazilian megastar. Real Madrid, Juventus, Barcelona, Chelsea and Manchester City have all been linked with the forward.
What RTK has to say
If Liverpool sign Neymar it would be the most bizarre move we’ve made since Steven Caulker.
There are some very obvious and very glaring issues with this move, namely money and ego. The Reds have avoided signing megastars in recent years because of the fees and personalities involved.
Michael Edwards has proven to operate surreptitiously and effectively in the transfer market – we haven’t gone all out for the global superstars, we have instead targeted players that represent value for money. For instance we signed Gini Wijnaldum for £25m and now he’s 26th in the Ballon d’Or world rankings.
The other issue is ego – we are a team, not a squad of individuals. Oftentimes Neymar has wanted to do it all himself, the ascent of Kylian Mbappe has been an issue at the French club. With the Brazilian desperate for Ballon d’Or recognition, he is not the type of player we’d want in the dressing room.
This doesn’t seem like the most reliable rumour. If Liverpool signed Neymar we would obviously get behind the player but for now we feel it’s better if we stick to our diamonds in the rough.
