This weekend sees Liverpool take on Watford in what is sure to be one of the Reds’ most routine victories of the season. Jürgen Klopp’s men head into the game in strong form, three impressive wins on the bounce have ended a run of close fought triumphs. Liverpool need to batter Watford this weekend to take goal difference out of the equation.
Back in October we saw Leicester City trounce Southampton 9-0 at St.Mary’s. The Foxes ran up the score, obliterating the hosts and doing wonders for their goal difference in the process.
The Premier League has seen some narrow finishes in the last decade. Goal difference has often been a factor. When we head into the final games, if there’s just a point in it, an unassailable goal difference lead can be worth a point itself. Last season the Reds’ goal difference was five behind Manchester City’s. In 2011-12 the Citizens beat their local rivals to the title on goal difference.
Saturday is the ideal opportunity for the Reds to follow Leicester City’s example against Southampton. If Liverpool batter Watford then we can step towards taking goal difference out of the final reckoning – we are currently three goals behind Leicester City in this regard.
Sure, we are already miles ahead at the top. This doesn’t mean that we should rest on our laurels. Battering the Hornets wouldn’t just aid our goal difference, it would also serve as warning to the rest of the division. It would tell them that we are back to our exuberant best.
For a majority of our opening months of the season we were scraping wins, holding out or bagging last minute goals. We now appear to be back in emphatic form. A big win over bottom place Watford would serve to demoralise any other side coming up against us in the coming weeks.
