In recent windows Liverpool have proved to be one of the niftiest operators in the transfer market. We have barely put a foot wrong since Jürgen Klopp’s arrival. For a while it looked as though Marko Grujic may have been the only misstep but the Serbian midfielder is now tearing up the Bundesliga. Apparently even when we were failing in the market we sometimes got lucky – Ashley Young has claimed that he rejected Liverpool before he joined Manchester United.
The ex-England international cost Man United a reported £17m back in 2011. He arrived at Old Trafford from Aston Villa as a winger but has played much of his Lancashire football as a full back.
Speaking to the UTD Podcast, the Young said:
“My agent called me and said: ‘Listen, you’re going into the last year of your contract, there are a few teams that are in for you. He said Liverpool. We’d already spoken to [Manchester] City. Then he said United had come in. And I said: ‘When am I meeting Sir Alex? Where’s the pen?’ There was no other place I wanted to go… As soon as my agent said that… we didn’t even meet Liverpool!”

Phew! Ok, fair enough, way back in 2011 he may have added something to the side. However, his wages would have been a huge stumbling block.
There is also the consideration that if Ashley Young hadn’t rejected Liverpool then we could have missed out on some of our finest talents down the years. The obvious name is Trent Alexander-Arnold – who would want a mega wage old timer starting ahead of the Scouser in our team?
