Tuesday saw Liverpool do what Liverpool do. They headed into a tricky tie in Europe and they came up with the goods. Jürgen Klopp’s men progressed to the last 16 of the Champions League with a 2-0 win over Red Bull Salzburg. A disciplined display out of possession and an electric showing on the ball secured the victory. Despite the joy of progressing as group winners, there was a sour note with Dejan Lovren limping off. Joe Gomez now simply has to take his chance this December.

This is now two games in a row where we have seen Dejan Lovren forced off early. The Croatian was substituted before halftime at the weekend with what was determined to be ‘a cramp’. In Austria we saw the centre half brought off after 53 minutes with what appeared to be a knee injury.

Joe Gomez came on as the replacement and performed well for the remainder of the game. It is important to highlight that between the pair they managed to keep a clean sheet against a side that have scored 87 goals in their first 24 games this season – a truly phenomenal tally that required a truly phenomenal defensive display from the Reds.

JoGo has been out of the side since his leg break this time last year. He lost his place to Joel Matip as the Cameroonian came on leaps and bounds when given his shot.

Joe Gomez needs to step up in December, he needs to take his chance and stake his claim for that number one spot – well, number one partner for Virgil van Dijk.

The 22-year-old has the potential to be one of the best defenders of his generation, if he can perform well in Lovren and Matip’s absences then he will be able to secure that starting berth that will be crucial to his development.
