Gabriel ‘Gabigol’ Barbosa spoke of his admiration for Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino. The Brazilian hopes he gets to play with his compatriot.

Barbosa made headlines last month as his two late goals delivered the Copa Libertadores to Flamengo. The next day, results elsewhere confirmed the Campeonato Brasileiro, too, a trophy Gabigol helped deliver with 25 goals in 28 games.

And as his future takes the stage, he’s spoken of his admiration for Firmino.

“Firmino is great, I really admire him,” Gabigol said, per the Daily Mail. “He’s been successful for many years in Europe.

“He is a powerful forward and he has been great for Brazil. He is an inspiration that I look up to.

“It would be a pleasure to play with him. Maybe we could team up for Brazil in the future and Liverpool is a team that everyone wants to play for.”

What RTK has to say

Firstly, it’s great just to see praise for Firmino. While he’s become the world’s most-rated underrated player in recent years, it’s still nice whenever he’s hailed as one of the best.

Even more so when you hear notable players want to play with him. But how notable is Gabigol? Would Liverpool want him.

Gabigol’s spell in Europe was disastrous but things improved dramatically since rejoining Santos on loan in 2018. He scored 27 goals in his first season back, earning a loan to Flamengo for 2019.

And 43 goals delivering two major trophies have put the striker back on the map. Flamengo now have a decision to make – will they pay £20m to sign him permanently?

As for a potential move to Liverpool, it seems unlikely but his recent form is very exciting. Exciting enough that you’d have to consider him at least. The real problem is that there isn’t much room for a new centre-forward with Divock Origi around.

But should a place free up, it would be pretty fun to see Gabigol achieve his goal of linking up with Firmino. We wouldn’t hold our breath, though.
