Back in 2013 Liverpool looked set to bag Christian Eriksen – the then Ajax prodigy. The Reds had been at the front of the queue all summer but were eventually pipped at the post by Spurs when they offered the Danish playmaker exuberant wages that we weren’t prepared to match. With the creative midfielder set to leave North London on a free in the summer, we believe that Liverpool should make an audacious move to sign Christian Eriksen in the summer.
According to The Evening Standard, Spurs are willing to listen to offers less than £40m for the Dane in January. This is surely a sign that the arrival of Jose Mourinho has not been enough to persuade the player to sign a new contract.
There has been an enduring standoff between the player and his club. Eriksen has been refusing to sign a new contract in order to force through a dream move to La Liga in the summer. Real Madrid have been courting the attacking midfielder for a while and are surely favourites for his signature.
However, with the Reds the current champions of Europe and nailed on for the Premier League title, there is no reason that we shouldn’t be in the conversation.
Since the departure of Philippe Coutinho we have lacked a creative spark in midfield – we have been missing a player that can unpick a defence or lash one in from distance, Eriksen can do both of these things with aplomb.
With the Danish midfielder available on a free it would be foolish of Liverpool to not even attempt to bring Christian Eriksen to Anfield. Clubs pay tens of millions for talent like his, if we can get him on a free then he could be one of our best value signings of all time.
