Our view: Rafa Benitez should be next Everton manager

Everton are in total disarray. The Blues are currently 17th in the table, just two points safe from the relegation zone. With a manic winter period ahead which sees the side take on Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal in the Premier League, Marco Silva may not be in a job much longer. Rafa Benitez should be the first choice for the Everton job if the board sack Silva.

Now, there is obviously the issue of Rafa Benitez being a Liverpool legend. The Spaniard took over the Reds in 2004 following the sacking of Gerard Houllier. The Spaniard won the Champions League in his first season with Liverpool and came close to the Premier League title in 2009.

Since leaving the Reds he has won the Supercoppa Italiana twice, the Club World Cup, the Europa League, the Coppa Italia and the Championship.

He is currently managing Dalian Yifang in China but, well, who cares?

The Ev are in desperate need of a change and they’ll need a world class manager to enact this change. They simply cannot make another uninspiring appointment like they did with Sam Allardyce. Mark Hughes has been linked with the job for crying out loud.

Rafa Benitez should the first choice for the Everton job because he is a pragmatist. Right now, our neighbours need their ship steadied. They are in something of a free fall and there can be little doubt that Rafa would be able to deploy a parachute. He has shown throughout his career that he can set out a team that are incredibly hard to beat. It may not be pretty but it works.

Would he take the job? Most likely. Would Kopites begrudge him taking the job? Not at all. Rafa loves the city and the city loves him, he would be welcomed back with open arms by Reds and Blues alike. You would have to be the bitterest of Blues to not want a manager of Benitez’s pedigree to take over given the state they are in.
