Reports link Rhian Brewster with a January loan away. The obvious destination is the Premier League – but that may not be the best.
The Star are one outlet reporting it. They believe Leeds United, Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Swansea are all interested in Brewster and want him in January.
It’s a shame, really. Brewster’s season looked very bright before it began but it’s never got going. We initially thought that he may be the reason Liverpool didn’t move for anyone. That may still be true, of course, but it’s a mistake from the club in hindsight.
Then there was the possibility that he was simply getting ‘the new signing treatment’. Again, very possibly true – but things have moved backwards if he was.
And that should be a warning to Liverpool. If they want Brewster to improve, he needs games above all else – no more risks.
A loan to the Premier League would be a risk for Brewster. There would be a good chance that they, like Liverpool, decide not to give him necessary time and his progress continues to stall.
Instead, the Championship makes the most sense. Find a club that can guarantee him the games he needs and, hopefully, he thrives.
All he needs is one senior season to show what he can do and Liverpool can judge him properly. We’ve seen how players can step up from the Championship, for one thing.
Tammy Abraham dropped down there before becoming Chelsea’s number 9 this season. He’s made the jump up perfectly and Brewster could to.
But he needs the games to prove it. It’s too risky to loan him to Villa or Palace. Let him tear up the Championship, then he can build on that.
