Liverpool have to match the example Manchester City set in Europe last night. The Citizens won their Champions League group with a game to spare when they drew at home to Shakhtar Donetsk whilst Atalanta beat Dinamo Zagreb. If Jürgen Klopp beats Napoli tonight then he will have secured top spot in Group E.

City were held to a 1-1 draw at The Etihad on Tuesday night. Ilkay Gundogan put the hosts ahead just before the hour mark, Manor Solomon equalised for the Ukrainians with 20 minutes remaining.

Whilst Pep Guardiola’s side didn’t have their best night at the office – Gabriel Jesus didn’t manage a single touch in the opposition box in the first half – they still got the result that they needed. With Atalanta beating Dinamo Zagreb, the Citizens’ topping of the group was guaranteed.

The Lancashire club to travel to Ukraine in December, playing Shakhtar on a Wednesday and Arsenal on the Sunday, this was a vital game. The result means that the Spanish manager can rest key players ahead of a trip to the Emirates.

If Liverpool beat Napoli tonight then they will top Group E. With Jürgen Klopp set to journey to Austria to face Red Bull Salzburg in December, before welcoming Watford on the weekend, securing top spot with a game to spare could prove vital.

The Premier League title is won by fine margins. With City able to rest their first team ahead of a difficult trip to North London, they have an advantage going into a big tie. Liverpool need to match the example that Manchester City set in Europe, we need to be able to put out a weakened side in Austria in order to keep the lads completely fresh for the title race.
