Andy Robertson urges Reds to get back to clean sheets

This time last season the Reds were the most miserly defence around. Liverpool had Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk in the middle of their rearguard and the pair rarely conceded. This season has been a wholly different tale, Jürgen Klopp’s men have only shut out Premier League opposition twice. Andy Robertson has urged a return to clean sheets as soon as possible.

Speaking at the Reds’ pre-match press conference, broadcast on the club’s official site, Robbo told the press:

“Some of the goals we’ve conceded have been high quality, some have been poor from us. It’s important that we get back to clean sheets. It let’s attackers go and do what they do. If you’re conceding in games, we can’t always rely on scoring late or coming from behind.”

What RTK has to say

Returning to regular clean sheets could be the difference between winning the title and falling short. The Reds have more than ridden their luck at times this season.

With late winners needed against Aston Villa and Crystal Palace, Jürgen Klopp’s men need to do more in future to keep the opposition out. There will be at least one game where the front three cannot rescue us.

Regularity is important to solidity in defence. Liverpool haven’t had the best of luck this season with injuries. Alisson Becker was missing for the start of the season and Joel Matip has been absent in recent weeks.

Virgil van Dijk needs a settled partner. When we manage to put the same back five out week in, week out, we will start seeing our clean sheet record improve.
