The current Premier League table has Liverpool eight points clear at the top and nine points clear of last year’s champions Manchester City. Kopites are cautiously optimistic but nobody is willing to say it out loud yet. Despite the gap at the top, Gabriel Jesus has issued a title warning to Liverpool in an interview with The National in the UAE.
Speaking ahead of Brazil’s 3-0 win over South Korea, The National asked the 22-year-old what he thought of his side’s title chances. Jesus replied: “Of course, [leaders Liverpool] are playing well, we know this, but we haven’t played like we know we can. We can play like we did last season and win the title again. It is not easy as this season is more difficult than last season.”
The Brazilian was also asked for his thoughts on the Reds’ Mo Salah, the striker spoke highly of the Egyptian, saying “Salah has showed his quality in the last two seasons, he has scored a lot. I don’t train with him, but I know he is quality.”
What RTK has to say
Gabriel Jesus has been brave with his comments about Liverpool and the title race. He had to be. Manchester City have a lot of ground to make up on the league leaders at the moment.
The Brazilian was right in his assessment of his team’s form: they haven’t played to the best of their abilities. The Citizens have been stricken with injuries throughout the season and have lost games due to hapless errors in a decimated defence.
However, the striker is well aware of the task that his side faces when their rivals boast a “quality” player such as Mo Salah. Whether the 22-year-old will be able to hit the same heights as the Egyptian remains to be seen, more game time is certainly needed if he wants to step up to Mo’s level.
