Vitor Matos opens up on life at Liverpool - "you feel the club"

Liverpool didn’t make many signings this summer. The only new arrivals were two backup keepers and two youth prospects. Six weeks or so after the window shut, there was another addition to the set up at Anfield: Vitor Matos. The Portuguese trainer became the new elite development coach at Melwood. The freshman staff member has opened up on life on Merseyside.

Matos arrived from Porto at the start of October. The 31-year-old was highly endorsed by Pep Lijnders, the Reds assistant boss referred to him as “signing of the season” during a press conference reported by the Liverpool ECHO. Lijnders was instrumental in the move having worked with the coach at Porto.

In an interview with the Liverpool FC official site, Vitor Matos contemplated joining such a storied team:

“After the phone rang, it started already bubbling inside of me: ‘this is Liverpool and you can never say no!’…Love is something that you cannot explain, but is something that you feel. For me, Liverpool is the same thing…More than everything you feel the club. The connection that we have in the club and with the fans, it’s unbelievable. Everything attracted me to this club.”

Kopites were definitely excited by the arrival of Vitor Matos. The new coach was spoken highly of by the people that matter and we have an obsession with seeing our academy products make it into the first team.

The Portuguese’s comments will endear him to the Anfield faithful no end. He just gets it, much like Jürgen Klopp does. Being a part of Liverpool is different to being a part of any other club. Vitor Matos was described as “the connector”, whilst this is his role within the club, he already seems well aware that he is not the only one connected. Every part of this family is connected: the fans, the players, the staff, the owners.

Fingers crossed, Vitor Matos will be able to repay the faith shown in him by his old mate Pep Lijnders.
