Any successful club needs a youth academy that they can rely on. Melwood has given us some of the game’s brightest talents over the years: Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard had the world at their feet, Trent Alexander-Arnold is the latest world class graduate. This week saw Elijah Dixon-Bonner sign a contract extension with the Reds. Jürgen Klopp will be delighted.
The 18-year-old midfielder joined Liverpool from Arsenal in 2015, signing his first professional contract in February 2018. After impressive performances for Neil Critchley’s U23s, the creative talent has been handed a new deal.
What RTK has to say
Giving Elijah Dixon-Bonner a new contract is a tremendous show of faith from the Liverpool management. The young midfielder has been in fine form of late, netting a memorable brace against Wigan Athletic.
Dixon-Bonner’s strong performances in the EFL Trophy will have no doubt played an important role in his new deal. Coming up against first team opposition is a good test of how young players are progressing physically and mentally – it appears that test has been passed.
Jürgen Klopp will be delighted with the youngster signing a new contract. Liverpool always need more creative talent in their approach play. The Reds have managed to establish themselves as the dominant side both at home and abroad in recent seasons without spending big. Young talents coming through the Melwood academy will further the club’s ability to maintain their position without splashing too much cash.
Fingers crossed we will see Elijah Dixon-Bonner turn out for the Reds sooner rather than later. With a hectic winter schedule ahead, including a controversial EFL Cup tie, the young midfielder may be called upon for a spot on the bench at least.
