Liverpool have an incredible seven players on this year’s shortlist for world football’s loftiest individual honour. With the prize often a bone of contention among fans, pundits and player’s alike, opinions are two a penny this time of year. Iker Casillas has weighed in on the debate in favour of Virgil van Dijk, saying it would “defy logic” if Cristiano Ronaldo beat the Dutchman to the Ballon d’Or.
#FelizFinDeSemana

The Spanish shot stopper is now at Porto but is best known for his time at Real Madrid. Casillas seemed perplexed that his former teammate is even in the conversation for the award. The goalkeeper cited the fact that Virgil van Dijk was crowned UEFA’s best player and Lionel Messi took home the FIFA equivalent. He goes on to say that given these two awards it would “defy logic” if Cristiano Ronaldo beat either of the players to the Ballon d’Or.
What RTK has to say
Iker Casillas endorsing Virgil van Dijk for the Ballon d’Or is no surprise. The Spaniard is a true football man, he is appreciative of the magic of Anfield and Anfield is appreciative of him. Whenever the goalkeeper has played in Liverpool he has received a warm welcome from the crowd, Kopites are well aware of his place in footballing history.
The Porto keeper has a point with his comments. To hand the award to Cristiano Ronaldo would be a damning indictment of the awards industry in football. For over a decade Messi and Ronaldo dominated these gongs but it is impossible to deny they have been eclipsed of late. It would be mawkish, bordering on corrupt, for Ronaldo to win the Ballon d’Or this year.
