Reports: Liverpool bid for Joe Gelhardt unlikely as teen signs new contract

Liverpool aren’t the only team looking to sign Joe Gelhardt. According to the report in The Daily Star, both Chelsea and Manchester United are also chasing the young striker.

Gelhardt’s list of admirers has grown with the 17-year-old having made seven appearances from the bench this season. The youth prospect has netted once in the Championship during these games.

There were suggestions that a bid for the forward would have come as early as January but with the teenager having signed a new contract with the club, a winter move is looking less likely.

Liverpool are in pole position to sign Joe Gelhardt thanks to his passion for the Reds. The Latics academy product grew up in Liverpool before making it at Wigan.

A lad with a sensible head on his shoulders, he has supported his local side ever since. Given the immense success that his boyhood club are enjoying under Jürgen Klopp, fulfilling his lifelong dream seems an enticing prospect.

It would be a leap of faith to sign Gelhardt before he gets more regular first team football under his belt. However, the lad has been incredibly impressive when he has got on the pitch. His first professional goal, scored against Hull, won the Wigan Athletic goal of the month. He clearly has the potential, let’s just hope he realises that potential at Anfield.
