This international break has been nothing short of a nightmare for Joe Gomez. The Liverpool defender found himself dominating headlines after Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling’s puerile attack at the start of the break. The situation has reached a low point as Joe Gomez has suffered an injury whilst on England duty.
The break didn’t get off to a good start. Following a tussle between the Three Lions teammates during Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Manchester City, Raheem Sterling and Joe Gomez clashed again at St.George’s Park.
The Manchester City forward started an altercation between the pair, reacting angrily to his team’s loss in the key Premier League fixture and his own personal subsequent lampooning online after coming off second best in his first bout with Gomez. The Reds’ defender trained the following day with a visible cut below his eye.
Sterling was, of course, dropped from consideration as a result. Bizarrely, Gomez was booed at Wembley because…he…was…assaulted.
The BBC reported that Joe Gomez picked up a knee injury at England training this weekend. He has been sent home to recover and clear his head.
What RTK has to say
Gomez picking up this injury with England couldn’t have come at a better time. In fact, the timing is suspiciously convenient.
The Three Lions qualified for the Euros with time to spare. Without getting all ‘tin foil hat time’, Gomez leaving the England camp early with injury is the perfect way to end this nightmare spell without the national side’s management losing too much face.
If the player is in fact injured then it this has been Murphy’s international break. There has been no respite for the Liverpool defender in the last week, he has been blameless at every turn yet has found himself constantly on the receiving end. Fingers crossed he doesn’t let this period get to him. A big Jürgen Klopp bear hug may be in order.
