The Liverpool defence is undoubtedly the most transformed back line in Europe in recent seasons. The Reds went from being leaky, shaky, unreliable and inconsistent at the back to one of the most impenetrable rearguards in the world. One of those that fell victim to the overhaul was Dejan Lovren, however, the defender has been in strong form recently. Shaka Hislop has named Lovren in his over 30 Premier League XI.
When Virgil van Dijk arrived at Anfield it looked like Lovren’s days were numbered in a Reds shirt. The Croatian was eventually relegated to the bench, as Joe Gomez and Van Dijk formed a partnership for the ages. The duo were impassable for months before Gomez had his leg broken against Burnley.
Joel Matip was given the nod over Dejan when Gomez was unavailable. The Cameroonian defender looked like a new signing when he lined up alongside Virgil.
With Matip now missing from the side, Dejan Lovren has been given another chance and he has taken it with aplomb. Shaka Hislop told ESPN: “Dejan Lovren has been far better, far more consistent than we have seen him in his entire Liverpool career. Maybe that has a lot do with playing alongside Van Dijk…in terms of defenders over 30 [Lovren] has been as good as we’ve seen if not better than anyone else in the Premier League.”
What RTK has to say
The rebirth of Dejan Lovren has been the best way to be proved wrong. Many Kopites wrote the Croatian off after his error prone seasons towards the start of his Liverpool career.
However, once again, Jürgen Klopp has improved a player in his squad. The World Cup finalist now looks assured, confident and reliable. With the Liverpool squad now boasting three strong partners for Virgil van Dijk, we are well prepared for a hectic winter schedule.
