It is no secret that during his time at Manchester United, Roy Keane despised Liverpool. The Irishman was a figurehead of Sir Alex Ferguson’s great sides and he loved few things more than a big tackle when playing his Merseyside rivals. Since entering the punditry game, Roy Keane has come across as an admirer of Liverpool and the way they are playing.
On Sunday the Reds brushed Manchester City aside, defeating the Premier League champions 3-1 at Anfield. The win put Liverpool nine points clear of Pep Guardiola’s men and eight points clear of their nearest challengers Leicester City and Chelsea.
Speaking on Sky Sports after the game, Roy Keane referred to Liverpool as the best team in the world. The Irishman pointed at the Reds’ Champions League heroics of last season, saying “Barcelona came here, what was the score? 4-0? They ripped them to shreds.”
Keane continued, “The way they’re playing, it’s fantastic. On top of everything they’ve got…they look an incredibly fit team.”
What RTK has to say
The fact that Roy Keane is drooling over Liverpool speaks volumes. For years the former United midfielder would come to Anfield and relish in tasty challenges with Steven Gerrard et al. However, any sensible footballing character would be falling over themselves to praise this side.
Sunday was a trademark Liverpool performance and Keane hit the nail on the head when he praised their fitness. It is the stamina and determination of the Reds that makes them so difficult to play against, to keep the ball against. The likes of Jordan Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum don’t give you a moment’s rest. The Reds are a nightmare to play and, as Roy Keane pointed out, they are the best team in the world.
