Rafael Van der Vaart values Virgil van Dijk at €300m

Liverpool currently boast one of the most valuable squads in world football. According to Transfermarkt, the Reds squad is the fourth most valuable behind Barcelona, Real Madrid and Man City. Up until this summer, Liverpool owned the world’s most expensive defender in Virgil van Dijk. However, Man United broke the record that the Reds set in 2018 when they signed Harry Maguire for £80m over the summer. Speaking after Liverpool’s draw with Man United, former Real Madrid midfielder Rafael van der Vaart valued Virgil van Dijk at €300m.

Van der Vaart enjoyed journeyed career throughout Europe, spending time at Real Madrid, Spurs, and Hamburg to name but a few. The attacking midfielder started his career at Ajax. He was known for his instinctive attacking positioning and delicious technique when striking a ball.

Speaking to Dutch outlet Ziggo Sport after the draw between Man United and Liverpool at Old Trafford, he had some harsh words for Harry Maguire and some high praise for Virgil van Dijk.

The former Madrid man asserted, “when I go to see an amateur club on Sunday, I can find 3 players who can play like [Harry Maguire]”. The now professional darts player took issue with the monumental transfer fee that brought Maguire to Old Trafford and put it into context of Van Dijk’s move to Liverpool as he continued, “we are talking about a €90M signing here. Then Van Dijk is worth €300M.”

Finally, someone talking a bit of sense. Eyebrows were raised throughout the world when Man United eclipsed the fee that the Reds paid for their Dutch colossus, Van der Vaart’s comments may be hyperbolic but they are spot on when you are comparing the two player’s valuations.
