Liverpool visited Old Trafford on Sunday. The Reds went into the game 5 points clear at the top of the table and finished the game 6 points clear, still unbeaten in the league. A woeful refereeing display by Martin Atkinson gifted a point to the hosts. The Sky Football panel for the game consisted of Roy Keane, Jose Mourinho and Graeme Souness. I never thought I’d see the day that I’d be sat here singing Roy Keane’s praises. However, the Man United legend made a very good point in the build up to the big game on Sunday that Liverpool fans can agree with.
Keane is an icon at Old Trafford. The Irish midfielder garnered a reputation for being one of the nastiest, hardest centre midfield players of his day. He played 480 times for the Red Devils, picking up 19 major trophies along the way. Whilst playing for United he struck up a fierce, big tackle rivalry with Patrick Vieira and, to a lesser extent, Steven Gerrard.
Before the Man United v Liverpool match, cameras showed the two sides lining up in the tunnel. The Brazilian players were seen to be hugging each other, Roberto Firmino and Fred embraced, Alisson and Andreas Pereira also. Roy Keane was disgusted. He told Sky Football “you’re going to war and they’re hugging and kissing!”
Liverpool fans can definitely agree with Roy Keane on this point. This is Liverpool and Man United. This is a game like no other. You are meant to go on to that pitch and kick seven shades out of each other until one of you comes out on top. As Roy Keane continued, “don’t even look at the opposition”. By hugging the opposition in the tunnel, you are setting the wrong tone for what should be one of the most brutal games in the English football season.
