Liverpool's eight-point lead won't be enough to hold off Manchester City

Liverpool extended their lead at the top of the Premier League table to eight points this weekend.

The Reds beat visitors Leicester City in dramatic fashion at Anfield, while Manchester City fluffed their chance to close the gap, losing at home to Wolves.

Liverpool now enjoy a huge lead at the top of the table just eight games into the campaign.

While that is amazingly impressive, the Reds must continue to increase this lead in the Autumn months and here is why:

Liverpool will drop points at some point this season. All great teams suffer dips in form and Jurgen Klopp’s side will be no different.

That is exactly why the Reds must secure as big a points haul as possible heading into the second half of the campaign.

Raphinha, Coutinho and Tielemans: The signings Liverpool could make this summer

Just last year we saw Liverpool surrender a seven-point lead much later in the season. Manchester City were relentless and will be again as they pursue a third consecutive Premier League title.

Right now City are weak. The loss of the leadership of Vincent Kompany and the world-class quality of Aymeric Laporte has left their defence in disarray.

Pep Guardiola’s men will drop more points before Christmas and it is up to Liverpool to punish them every time they do.

Once the winter window arrives, City could throw a huge amount of money at their defensive problem. The Citizens will fix this problem sooner or later, they simply have to.

In the meantime, it is up to Liverpool to take advantage of this situation by amassing a points haul that makes us un-catchable once City get back to their best.
